Commemoration of Kedron Shire Council with memorial plaque.

1925 Kedron Shire Council Office, thanks to Chermside & Districts Historical Society

In 1925, Brisbane changed forever. The formation of Brisbane City Council brought together 20 separate councils, including the Kedron Shire, under one unified local government.

The Kedron Shire Council, originally the Nundah Division, was formed in 1879 under the Divisional Boards Act, it later became the Kedron Division and then in 1903 was named the Kedron Shire. It was ultimately amalgamated into the City of Brisbane on 1 October 1925.

As part of the centenary commemorations, Cr Danita Parry and the Chermside & Districts Historical Society will unveil a new memorial plaque and information board recognising the former Kedron Shire Council and its role in shaping our community.

The plaque will be installed near the Marchant Park gates, close to the original site of the Kedron Shire building, which once stood on the eastern side of Gympie Road. The building was sold for demolition in 1926, not long after amalgamation.

The buildings may be gone, but the stories remain. We welcome you to join us and mark this important milestone in Brisbane’s story.

What: Commemoration of Kedron Shire Council Memorial Plaque unveiling by Cr Danita Parry and the Chermside & Districts Historical Society

When: Sunday 12 October, 2.00–4.00pm

Where: Marchant Park (near the park gates)The Kedron Shire Council, originally the Kedron Division, was formed in 1879 under the Divisional Boards Act, becoming the Shire of Kedron in 1903, and was ultimately amalgamated into the City of Brisbane on October 1, 1925.

Cr Danita Parry will be commemorating the Kedron Shire Council and its building, which was on the east side of Gympie Road, with a plaque and information board in Marchant Park, near the Marchant Park Gates where most people would see them.

The building was sold off in 1926 by the new Greater Brisbane City Council very soon after the demise of Kedron Shire, along with many others, with the amalgamation into Greater Brisbane in 1925.  Sadly, the building was sold for demolition.
