Ideas for History Groups
What can your history group do to commemorate the Centenary?
1. Oral History Projects
Interview key figures: Conduct interviews with people who have lived in your locality for a significant portion of their lives. Ask them about their experiences with the council, changes they've witnessed, and their favourite memories of the city.
Create time capsules: Collect items, documents, and stories from the community to create time capsules that can be opened in future decades.
2. Historical Walking Tours
Develop themed tours: Create walking tours that focus on specific aspects of your locality’s history, such as transportation, architecture, or social movements.
Incorporate interactive elements: Use technology, such as QR codes or augmented reality, to enhance the tour experience and provide additional information.
3. Educational Programs and Workshops
Organise workshops for schools: Develop educational programs that teach students about the history of their locality and the role of the council in shaping the city.
Host community lectures: Invite experts to give talks on various topics related to Brisbane's history.
4. Digital Initiatives
Create a digital archive: Collect and digitise historical documents, photographs, and other materials to preserve Brisbane’s Councils’ history, in your particular locality.
Develop a website or app: Create a platform where people can access information about the council's history within your locality and contribute their own stories.
6. Collaborative Projects
Partner with local businesses: Work with businesses to create special offers or events related to the centenary.
Collaborate with other historical organisations: Join forces with other history groups to share resources and organise joint events, like your local libraries or other historical groups that share boundaries of old Council/Town/Shire zones.
By combining these ideas with the unique interests and expertise of your history groups, you can create a memorable and meaningful celebration of Brisbane City Council's centenary.
Make sure you utilise social and traditional media to shout-out about your events, and tell us here at 100YearsofGreaterBrisbane@gmail.com, so we can shout out about it too!
