Enoggera Shire, formed in 1879, covered a substantial area northwest of the Brisbane CBD, including what are now The Gap and parts of Ashgrove. Its name is derived from an Aboriginal word, referring to a specific place or feature. Enoggera's history is closely linked to its natural environment, with the Enoggera Reservoir providing a vital water source for Brisbane. The shire also saw the development of agricultural pursuits and, over time, residential estates as the city expanded.
