Balmoral Shire

Map of Balmoral Shire and adjacent local government areas, March 1902, Queensland Survey Office Local Authorities Districts, Queensland.

Balmoral Shire, established in 1888, was situated along the Brisbane River to the east of the CBD. Its name, evocative of the Scottish royal estate, hints at the aspirations of its early residents. Balmoral's history is closely tied to its riverside location, with early industries like timber getting and sawmills. Over time, it developed into a mix of residential areas, particularly along the riverfront, and some light industry, before its amalgamation into Greater Brisbane.
