Belmont Shire

Belmont Shire, formed in 1888, was located to Brisbane's southeast. Its name, "Belmont," meaning "beautiful mountain," suggests the topography of the area. Belmont's history is largely one of rural and semi-rural land use, with farming and the presence of significant open spaces. While less intensely developed than some of its western counterparts, Belmont played a role in providing agricultural produce for the growing city and eventually became part of its outer suburban fringe.
