The City of South Brisbane was a separate municipality from 1888 until the 1925 amalgamation. Located on the southern bank of the Brisbane River, it developed into a significant commercial and industrial hub, distinct from the main City of Brisbane. South Brisbane's history is marked by its wharves, factories, and bustling markets, as well as the establishment of cultural institutions. Its independent status allowed for distinct urban planning and development before it became an integral part of Greater Brisbane.
