Taringa Shire, a small but significant entity, existed from 1890 to 1925. Located to the west of the Brisbane CBD, its name is thought to come from an Aboriginal word meaning "place of stones." Taringa's history is largely one of suburban development, with its close proximity to the city centre making it an attractive residential area. The construction of the railway line further spurred its growth, transforming it from a semi-rural district into a popular residential locale.
