Toombul Shire, established in 1879, covered a substantial area north of the Brisbane River, including what are now the bustling suburbs of Nundah, Clayfield, and Albion. Its name is believed to be derived from an Aboriginal word for a specific type of tree. Toombul's history is characterised by early farming, the establishment of significant racecourses (like Eagle Farm), and the gradual emergence of residential and commercial centres. Its strategic location near the river and major transport routes contributed to its eventual integration into the expanding city.
