Toowong has an interesting dual history, existing first as Toowong Shire (1880-1903) and then as Toowong Town (1903-1925). Its name is believed to be derived from an Aboriginal word relating to a species of bird or a bird call. Toowong's history is one of steady suburban development, driven by its picturesque location along the Brisbane River and its convenient access to the city. It became a desirable residential area with grand homes and significant civic institutions.
